The Benefits of Public Transport

Public transport isn't practical for everyone's daily commute, but most of us could make more use of it in our business and personal lives. Public transportation systems have benefits in social, environmental, health and economic aspects. Some of these are described below.

One of the most important benefits of using public transport is the reduction in air pollution. Air pollution not only damages our environment but can aggravate asthma in children. So by not taking the car you are reducing this impact, especially as an ever-growing number of public transport vehicles (e.g. trams and buses) are now electric.

Reducing the number of vehicles on the road also helps with congestion. Making it easier and safer to get to your destination. It also increases the lifespan of road surfaces, leading to less delays caused by roadworks.

Our personal health can also benefit by using public transport. For example, for most of us it would involve some walking to/from the bus/tram/train stop, giving us exercise we wouldn't normal get taking the car. Traveling on public transport also relieves the stress of driving in busy town centres and gives us the chance to relax (e.g. by reading or taking a quick nap).

Taking public transport is also cheaper than owning a car and can be more convenient (e.g. no need to try and find a parking space).

Public transport helps your community. It allows people who can't afford a car, or who are unable to drive, to have a means of getting about.

In conclussion, using public transport, where possible, can make a real difference to your community, your environment, your health and even your wealth.
